WSET Level 3 Award in Wines

This is a 6-day course (38 hours), with 80 wines from across the globe.

This course is for those working or aspiring to work in more senior positions in the trade or for the very involved enthusiast. It provides a detailed understanding of grape growing and wine making in all of the significant regions of the world. Upon completion you will be able to assess wines accurately, and use your understanding to confidently explain wine style and quality. We strongly recommend taking the Level 2 course prior to Level 3, although Level 2 is NOT a pre-requisite.

Program Outline:

Unit 1

  • The key factors in the production of wine: location, grape growing, winemaking, maturation and bottling
  • How these key factors influence the key characteristics of the principal still, sparkling, & fortified wines of the world
  • How to apply your understanding to explain wine style and quality

Examination: Unit 1 is assessed by a closed-book exam of 50 multiple-choice questions and a paper of short written answers.

Unit 2

  • How to taste wines, describe their characteristics and evaluate their quality, using the WSET Level 3 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® (SAT)

Examination: Unit 2 is assessed by a blind tasting of two wines.

A minimum of 60 hours of home study recommended. Study packs will be available in advance.
